WHAT BUSINESS ARE YOU IN, REALLY?
If I want to buy a new Laptop computer (product), chances are I’ll research different brands and models online first. I may check them out at a few stores and get opinions of geeks in the store. Ultimately, I don’t care who or where I buy from because the product will be the same.
BUT, If I am going to invest time and money in a new office computer system and the service to make sure it works correctly, I want to make sure I trust the seller, believe they have the skills needed to assess my company’s needs today and into the future, and to setup and maintain the system. I also want to make sure they’ll be on the ready tomorrow and 10 years from now, and probably 10 years after that.
So, with a product-based business, the right Laptop is the single focus, whereas, with a service based business, there’s more to the equation: I’m trusting my business to a partner for an honest needs assessment, recommendation, and having the right field team who installs and maintains the system.
Look at it like this:
Products work toward winning a transaction
Services work toward building relationships and experiences
